A letter to someone you lost, for everything left unsaid
Written by hand · Sealed with wax · Sent as one link
Grief often leaves a list of things you meant to say: an apology, a thank-you, a piece of news they never heard. A good letter to someone who has died talks to them the way you used to, in your ordinary voice, and does not try to end on a tidy lesson.

Ways to begin
“Dad, I don't know where to start, so I'll start here: the house is quiet, and I still reach for the phone on Sundays.”
“Grandma, I never told you I kept the recipe card in your handwriting. I take it out every December and make your rolls.”
“I'm still angry that you left, and I'm still grateful you were mine. Both are true today, so I'm writing both down.”
What to write
1. Begin with one small, real detail: the way they said your name, their coat on the hook, the song in their car. A detail opens the door better than a big statement.
2. Say the hard thing plainly. If you owe an apology or still feel anger, write it as it is. Nobody is reading to judge you, and a polite version won't give you the relief you came for.
3. Tell them what has happened since: who was born, what changed, how the family is doing. It keeps them in the conversation, and it gives you something to write when the feelings are too big.
Frequently asked questions
Q. Does writing a letter to someone who died actually help with grief?
It can't promise relief, and grief doesn't run on a schedule. Many people find that putting the unsaid things into words gives them somewhere to go. Write in short sittings, stop when it's too much, and come back later. If the weight feels unmanageable, talk to someone you trust or a counselor.
Q. Can I keep the letter private, or share it with just one family member?
Yes. You seal the letter with sealing wax and can set a password, so only the people you tell can open it. It goes out as one link through any messenger, text or email, and opens in a browser with no app and no sign-up. Writing, sealing and sending are free.
