A thank-you note for a gift, in words that sound like you
Written by hand · Sealed with wax · Sent as one link
Most thank-you notes stall at the same spot: the gift was kind, but you're not sure what to say about it. The notes people keep are not the fanciest ones, they're the ones that name the gift, say what it will be used for, and sound like the person who wrote them.

Ways to begin
“Thank you for the stand mixer. I made banana bread in it the first weekend, and the kitchen smelled like my grandmother's house.”
“Your generous gift is going into our house fund, and every time we look at that number we'll think of you both. Thank you for believing in us.”
“It was so thoughtful of you to remember how much I wanted to start painting again. The watercolor set is on my desk, and I'm already halfway through a first sketch.”
What to write
1. Name the gift out loud and say one real thing you've done or plan to do with it. For money, say what it's going toward, such as the honeymoon, the nursery or the savings account.
2. If you didn't love the gift, thank them for the thought, the effort or the time, and don't pretend to a use you don't have. Something like "it was so kind of you to think of us" is true and still warm.
3. Skip the apology for being late and the long list of other gifts. Write a few lines to this one person, mention something personal like seeing them at the party, and end by saying you hope to see them soon.
Frequently asked questions
Q. How do I thank someone for money without sounding awkward?
You don't need to name the amount. Thank them for the generosity, then say what the money is helping with, even if it's something simple like furniture, diapers or a trip. Closing with how much it meant to have them there makes it personal.
Q. Can I send my thank-you note by text or email instead of mailing a card?
Yes. Your letter is sealed with wax and sent as one link through any messenger, SMS or email. They open it in a browser with no app and no sign-up. Writing, sealing and sending are free.
