Writing a love letter in Korean when you're still learning
편지지에 직접 쓰고 · 실링왁스로 봉인하고 · 링크 하나로 보냅니다
Most learners get stuck in the same place: they know how to say 사랑해요, but not which speech level fits, or whether it sounds too heavy this early. A good Korean love letter doesn't need big vocabulary. It needs one consistent politeness level, short sentences you are sure of, and one detail only you could write.

이렇게 시작해보세요
“요즘 자꾸 민준 씨 생각이 나서 편지를 써요. (Lately I keep thinking of you, so I'm writing a letter.)”
“한국어가 아직 서툴지만, 제 마음을 직접 쓰고 싶었어요. (My Korean is still clumsy, but I wanted to write what I feel myself.)”
“오늘따라 네가 너무 보고 싶어서 펜을 들었어. (Today I miss you so much that I picked up a pen. Casual style, for a couple already speaking 반말.)”
무엇을 쓰면 좋을까요
1. Pick one speech level and keep it to the end. The -요 style (해요체) is the safe choice for a crush or new partner. Switch to 반말 only if the two of you already use it, and don't mix the two by accident.
2. Be careful with big words. 좋아해요 (I like you) fits early on, while 사랑해요 is heavier. Avoid 당신 for 'you', which sounds like a drama or a married couple. Use their name with 씨, or just their name if you're close.
3. Write short sentences you are sure of, and add one specific memory, such as the cafe you went to or a song you shared. Don't paste long poetic lines from a translator. If you can, ask a Korean friend to read it once before you send.
자주 묻는 질문
Q. Should I use 반말 or 존댓말 in a Korean love letter?
If you aren't sure, use 존댓말 in the -요 form. It is warm and polite, and it never offends. Use 반말 only when your partner already speaks that way to you. Avoid the very formal -습니다 ending, which can feel stiff in a love letter.
Q. Can I make the letter arrive on a special day, like an anniversary?
Yes. Set an opening date and the letter unlocks at 00:00 that day. You seal it with wax, add a password if you like, and send one link through any messenger, text or email. Writing, sealing and sending are free.
