The family holiday letter people actually read to the end
Written by hand · Sealed with wax · Sent as one link
Most year-end updates fail the same way: a list of promotions, trips and test scores that reads like a résumé. The ones relatives keep are built around a few small stories and a real thank-you, written in a voice that sounds like you at the kitchen table.

Ways to begin
“Another year, and somehow the dog is the only one who stayed the same size. Here is how the rest of us got on.”
“If you asked us for one word to describe this year, it would be 'loud', mostly because Theo discovered the drums in March.”
“We wanted to send more than a card this year, because there were people we missed and a lot we want to tell you.”
What to write
1. Pick three or four moments with a little story each, like the flooded basement or the first bike ride without training wheels, instead of listing every event.
2. Include one thing that did not go to plan and laugh about it gently. It makes the good news easier to enjoy and keeps you from sounding like you are bragging.
3. End by turning to the reader: ask about their year, mention something you remember about them, and say when you hope to see them.
Frequently asked questions
Q. How long should a family holiday letter be?
Aim for one page, around 300 to 400 words. Give each family member a line or two, keep the stories short, and stop while people still want more.
Q. Can I send the same letter to lots of relatives and friends?
Yes. Your sealed letter is one link, so you can paste it into a text, email or any messenger. Recipients open it in a browser with no app and no sign-up. If you add a password, only the people you tell can open it. Writing, sealing and sending are free.
