A thank-you letter to your boss that sounds like you mean it
Written by hand · Sealed with wax · Sent as one link
Most people stall on this letter because they fear it will read like a bid for a reference or a raise. What fixes that is specificity: one decision, one conversation, one moment when your manager made your work better. Write about what changed for you, not about how great they are.

Ways to begin
“I'm writing this before my last week gets busy, because I don't want to leave without telling you what the past three years under your guidance meant to me.”
“When you handed me the client presentation and said you trusted me with it, I walked out of your office taller than I walked in. I've never forgotten that.”
“Now that the launch is behind us, I wanted to say thank you for backing the team when the deadline moved and for never making us feel it was our fault.”
What to write
1. Name one specific moment, such as a piece of feedback, a project you were trusted with, or a time they defended you, and say what you did differently afterward.
2. Leave out any request. Don't mention references, promotions or future favors; if you need those, ask in a separate message.
3. Keep it to a few short paragraphs and end plainly, with something like "thank you for all of it", rather than a flourish. Skip flattery about their personality and stick to what they did.
Frequently asked questions
Q. How do I thank my boss without sounding like I'm sucking up?
Describe real events instead of general praise. A sentence like "your note on my first report taught me to lead with the conclusion" is believable because only you could write it. Avoid superlatives, and don't ask for anything in the same letter.
Q. Can I send it so my boss reads it on a specific day, like my last day?
Yes. Set an opening date and the letter unlocks at 00:00 that day. You send one link by email, text or any messenger, and your boss opens it in a browser with no app and no sign-up. Writing, sealing and sending are free.
