A letter to your newborn, for the day they're old enough to read it
Written by hand · Sealed with wax · Sent as one link
In the first weeks you are sure you'll remember everything, and then the details start to blur: the hour you got to the hospital, what the room smelled like, the first thing you said. A letter your child opens at 18 or 30 needs those small facts more than big wisdom, plus a few honest words about who you were when they arrived.

Ways to begin
“You were born on a Tuesday at 4:12 in the morning, and your dad had been awake so long he put your hospital bracelet on his own wrist.”
“You are three days old and asleep on my chest while I write this. I don't know yet who you'll be, but I want you to know who we were the week you came.”
“When you read this you'll be grown, and I'll probably be embarrassing you somewhere nearby. I wanted you to have this from the very beginning.”
What to write
1. Write down the birth story with plain details: the time, the weather, who was in the room, the first thing each person said. Skip the medical parts unless they matter to the story.
2. Say why you chose their name and what you noticed first, such as their hair, their frown or the noise they make when they're hungry. Your first impressions are what only you can give them.
3. Put in a snapshot of the present, like what groceries cost, the song you keep playing, and what worries you. Then name hopes for who they'll be, not for what job they'll have. Date the letter.
Frequently asked questions
Q. How long should a letter to a newborn be?
One page is enough. A birth story, a few first impressions, a handful of hopes and one honest sentence about how you feel right now will read well in twenty years. If you want to write more, make it a new letter each birthday instead of one very long one.
Q. How do I keep it safe until my child is old enough to open it?
You can set the opening date anywhere from tomorrow to a year away. For a day further off than that, seal the letter, save the link somewhere you'll find it, and send it when the day comes. You can add a password too if you like.
