A birthday letter to your girlfriend that sounds like you
Written by hand · Sealed with wax · Sent as one link
By the time her birthday comes around she has already read a dozen 'happy birthday' messages, and most of them look alike. What she won't get from anyone else is the specific things you've noticed about her this past year. A good letter has a few real moments in it, something you admire, and one thing you hope for in the year ahead.

Ways to begin
“Happy birthday, love. I tried writing this three times on my phone and deleted it each time, so I'm doing it properly this time.”
“I was thinking about the first time you laughed at one of my bad jokes and how I've been trying to get that laugh back ever since.”
“Another year of you, and I still catch myself looking at you when you're not paying attention. Here's what I see.”
What to write
1. Pick two or three small, true moments from the past year, like a trip, a bad day you got through together, or an inside joke, and write them out in detail rather than saying 'you make me happy'.
2. Name one thing you admire about her that she might not hear often, such as how she treats waiters, how she handles stress, or how she remembers everyone's birthday.
3. Skip the big promises about forever and end with something small and real, like a plan for the year ahead or something you want to do together soon.
Frequently asked questions
Q. How long should a birthday letter to my girlfriend be?
Half a page to a full page is plenty. A short letter with two real memories will mean more to her than a long one filled with general compliments. Stop when you've said what you actually wanted to say.
Q. Can I make it a surprise that she only opens on her birthday?
Yes. Set the opening date to her birthday and the letter unlocks at 00:00 that day. You can send the link ahead of time through any messenger, text or email, and she can't read it until the date arrives. You can also add a password, and writing, sealing and sending are all free.
