One letter to Mom and Dad, and how to make it feel personal
Written by hand · Sealed with wax · Sent as one link
Writing to two people at once is where most of us get stuck, because "Dear Mom and Dad" can slide into something generic. A good letter to both parents names what they did as a pair, and also gives each of them one moment that belongs only to them.

Ways to begin
“Mom and Dad, I'm writing this to you together because I can't picture one of you without the other, and that is part of what I want to thank you for.”
“Thirty-five years is a long time to keep choosing each other, and I've had a front-row seat to it. I want to tell you what I saw.”
“Dad, you're finally retiring, and Mom, you've been waiting for this almost as long as he has. This one is for both of you.”
What to write
1. Give each parent one separate memory, a sentence or two apiece, so neither feels like an afterthought. Then add one thing you saw them do as a team.
2. Skip the greeting-card lines about "the perfect couple." Write one real scene instead, like the two of them arguing over directions on a road trip or the way they still split the last piece of something.
3. Say what you are celebrating in the first few lines, whether that is an anniversary, retirement or simply thanks. Then use the rest to say what it meant to grow up with the two of them.
Frequently asked questions
Q. How do I address a letter to both parents without it sounding generic?
Open with "Mom and Dad," then quickly turn to specifics. Write a short paragraph to each of them by name, then one together about what they built as a pair. If your parents are divorced or live apart, you can still write one letter, but focus on what each gave you rather than on them as a couple.
Q. Can I make sure they open it on their anniversary or retirement day?
Yes. Set an opening date and the letter unlocks at 00:00 that day. You send one link by text, email or any messenger, and they open it in a browser with no app and no sign-up. You can also add a password and tell them only if you want to.
