A letter to the grandparent you can no longer call
Written by hand · Sealed with wax · Sent as one link
What goes unsaid to a grandparent is rarely dramatic. It's usually small: the thank-you you assumed there was time for, or the Sunday call you kept putting off. A good letter here needs one real memory, plain words, and the feeling that you're simply talking to them in the room.

Ways to begin
“Grandma, I don't know how to begin this, so I'll begin with your kitchen, because that's where I always find you.”
“Grandpa, it has been two years and I still reach for my phone on Sunday afternoons to call you.”
“The last time I visited, I had things I meant to tell you, and I kept saying next time. I'm saying them now.”
What to write
1. Start with one specific memory, such as the smell of her cooking, his terrible jokes or the way the porch door creaked. A concrete detail makes it easier to keep writing than a big opening statement.
2. Tell them what has happened since they left: a birthday, a new job, a baby, a small ordinary Tuesday. It lets you keep talking to them the way you used to.
3. Say the unsaid thing once, plainly, whether it's an apology, a thank-you or an I love you. Don't try to wrap it up neatly or write it perfectly. This letter doesn't need to be good, only true.
Frequently asked questions
Q. I feel guilty about things I never said. How do I put that in a letter?
Name it in one or two honest sentences, like 'I'm sorry I didn't visit more in the last year', and then write what you hope they knew about how you felt. Guilt tends to loop when it stays unspoken, and a short, direct line on the page often gives it somewhere to rest.
Q. Can I keep this private, or share it only with certain family members?
Yes. You seal the letter with wax and can add a password, so only the people you tell can open it. It goes out as one link through any messenger, text or email, and it opens in a browser with no app and no sign-up. You can also set an opening date, such as a birthday or anniversary, and it unlocks at 00:00 that day. Writing, sealing and sending are free.
