A letter to a friend getting married, happy and a little wistful
Written by hand · Sealed with wax · Sent as one link
When a close friend gets married, you are glad for them and quietly aware that the Tuesday-night phone calls and last-minute plans may change. A good letter lets both feelings sit side by side, names one or two real memories, and ends with something you want for them rather than a list of wishes.

Ways to begin
“I have been trying to write this for a week, because I am so happy for you and I also keep thinking about how much our lives are about to shift.”
“The first time you told me about him, you talked for forty minutes without noticing the coffee had gone cold. I knew then, and I have never seen you happier.”
“Whatever changes after the wedding, I want you to know that the friend who sat on your floor eating cereal at 2 a.m. is still right here.”
What to write
1. Pick one specific memory, such as a trip, a bad apartment or a night you got through together, and tell it in two or three lines instead of saying you have been through so much.
2. Say the wistful part plainly and briefly, for example that you will miss how easy it was to see each other, then turn to what you hope stays the same. Do not let it become a request for them to change nothing.
3. Say something kind about their partner, even one sentence about what you have noticed in how they treat your friend. It makes the letter welcome to both of them if it is read aloud or found later.
Frequently asked questions
Q. How do I mention feeling sad without spoiling the happy mood?
Keep the sadness to one honest sentence and place it in the middle of the letter, after the congratulations and before the wishes. Frame it as part of how much the friendship matters, for example: I will miss having you ten minutes away, and that is only because I have loved having you there. Then end warmly.
Q. Can I send this letter before the wedding and make it open on the day?
Yes. Set an opening date and the letter unlocks at 00:00 on that day. You send one link by any messenger, text or email, and your friend opens it in a browser with no app and no sign-up. You can also add a password that only you share. Writing, sealing and sending are free.
